New Jersey, known as the garden state, is located just to the South of New York on the Eastern seaboard.  It is bordered to the East by the Atlantic Ocean and is situated between the two dense population centers of Philadelphia and New York City.

New Jersey is home to more than eight million people, and is the fourth most populous state in the Nation.  It is significantly smaller than the three states with larger populations, making it the most densely populated state in the United States.  It is the third most wealthy state, with an above average median household income.  It also boasts the highest percentage of millionaire households of any state in America.

The main industries in New Jersey are incredibly diverse.  No single type of industry is dominate, but some notable ones include entertainment and pharmaceuticals.  Twenty-four fortune 500 companies are headquartered in New Jersey, contributing significantly to the economy.

In 1878 New Jersey became the third state admitted to the Union.  The area where New Jersey is located was first claimed by the Dutch people, but was annexed by the English when they overtook Fort Amsterdam.

With such an interesting history and abundance of places to go and things to do, it’s easy to see why so many people spend their vacation in New Jersey each year.

For travelers who enjoy the rush of gambling and the lights of vegas, head over to the premier casino destination on the East coast at Atlantic City.  Casinos, Broadway style shows, night clubs, concerts, and world famous restaurants all await you at Atlantic City.  Head over to the city that parties all night long and add a little excitement to your life!

After you’ve partied the night away in Atlantic City, head south just two miles to Margate City, New Jersey where you will find Lucy the elephant.  Lucy isn’t a real elephant, she’s a 6 story high building shaped like an elephant.  The giant elephant is built from wood and tin sheets.  Throughout the years the structure has housed a cigar shop, rooms, a restaurant, and many more businesses, though today she is a National Historic Landmark that draws plenty of visitors down from Atlantic City.

If you take a more serious approach to history, check out the Princeton battlefield, in Princeton, New Jersey.  The battlefield is where American and British troops fought each other during the American Revolution in 1777.  The battle that took place here was a victory for American troops.

If you are the type of person who enjoys spending a lot of time outdoors on your vacation, New Jersey has plenty of parks and activities to keep you busy and entertained for a very long time!  The state has many state parks, historical sites, and protected areas.

If you enjoy sun, sand, and pristine waters, head over to Island Beach State Park, in Seaside Park, New Jersey.  The park sits on a narrow barrier island that is 10 miles long and separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean.  The park offers swimming, subathing, fishing, and more!  A host of ammenities, such as showers and trash bags help tourists enjoy their time on the island.

For a truly unique experience, try visiting Ringwood State Park.  The park features 96 acres of botanical gardens that offer visitors the opportunity to view the fruits of centuries worth of gardening.  Two historical manors are situated on the park grounds and visitors can tour the manors for a small entrance fee.  Shepherds lake hosts swimming areas, fishing, and boating.  In the winter, there is also ice fishing.

If you’re outdoor pursuits involve golf, you may enjoy the Spring Meadow Golf Course located near Farmingdale, New Jersey.  The course has 18 holes to delight golfers of all ability levels.  The tree lined fairways, and Manasquan River, which runs through the property, create a picturesque golf course.

No matter what your preference is, New Jersey’s plentiful parks offer an array of activities to suit all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.

There are many ways to travel to New Jersey.  Whether you decide to drive in, fly in, ride the train or hop a ferry, your favorite spots for family fun are never very far away.  

Travelers choosing to drive into New Jersey on the many roads entering and crossing the state will find several primary roads.  The largest, most well known road in the state is the New Jersey Turnpike.  The toll road, carries passengers from all over the East cosat between New York and Delaware.  The second most famous road in the state is the Garden State Parkway.  This road takes the honor of being the safest street in the United States.

If you’re planning on flying into the state, the Newark Liberty International Airport is the largest airport in New Jersey.  It’s proximity to the New York area makes it one of the busiest airports in the United States.  Fed Ex operates a large cargo hub at the airport and several large airlines such as Continental have their main hubs there.

Adjacent to the airport you’ll find the Newark Airport Railway Station.  Amtrak and New Jersey Transit operate trains that run throughout the state and carry hundreds of passengers each day.  There are three light rail systems in the state, though only the Newark Light Rail system is contained entirely within the boundaries of New Jersey.

Finally, if you are heading to New Jersey from Delaware or New York, you can ride a ferry into the state.  The port of New Jersey has several Ferry docks, and hundreds of passengers ride the ferry every day into and out of the state.
