Townsend, Tennessee – The Peaceful Side of the Smokies

Enjoy the mountain air of Townsend, Tennessee - a quaint mountain community located at the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We call it The Peaceful Side of the Smokies. You can stay in a cabin, hotel, bed and breakfast, or at a campsite. Townsend offers the best in Smoky Mountain culture, including arts/crafts, museums, hiking, biking, tubing, horseback riding, live music, and four annual festivals.

Four times a year, Townsend comes alive as 25,000 visitors come together to celebrate Appalachian culture at the Winter, Spring, Pottery and Fall heritage festivals. The festivals have been selected more than once as one of the Southeast Tourism Society's top 20 events, and admission is free.

Smoky Mountain culture is the heart and soul of the festivals, with hundreds of local musicians, artisans, crafters, quilters, chefs, antique collectors and pottery makers participating in these events.

The Winter Festival is held in mid-February, and the Spring Festival is held the last week in April and the first Friday and Saturday in May, an ideal time to view the abundance of wildflowers in the mountains. The Pottery Festival takes place in June, and the fall festival is held the last Friday and Saturday in September, allowing visitors to experience the changing colors of fall.

    Visit Little Washington
    • Visit Little Washington

    Little Washington

Founded in 1776, the city of Little Washington, North Carolina, was the first city in America to be named for General George Washington. Because of this, it is still occasionally referred to as “Original Washington.”

This historical gem is nestled in Eastern North Carolina along the Pamlico Tar River, making Little Washington known among visitors and residents as a beautiful, scenic destination. The well-known waterfront creates one of the most popular gathering spots in town, taking on a life of its own during annual festivals, local events and holidays.

Little Washington combines Southern charm and beautiful natural settings to create one of the “coolest small towns in America,” as selected by Budget Travel. With a beautiful and historic downtown, Little Washington is known for the stately homes and lovely gardens that make up its residential area, as well as the ornate brickwork featured on the vintage commercial buildings of Main Street.

From miles of waterway trails and the country’s very first Estuarium, to local restaurants and art galleries, Little Washington has a little bit of everything.

    More on Little Washington

Recently, over 300 miles of paddle trails were mapped in the Pamlico River basin around Little Washington. With these trails, visitors can explore small creeks and tributaries and traverse the wide-open spaces of the Pamlico. Outdoor enthusiasts have plenty of adventurous options including fishing, camping, hiking, biking, boating and more.

One of the more notable stops in Little Washington is the North Carolina Estuarium, the world’s first estuarium and only estuarium in North Carolina. With over 200 exhibits, aquariums and works of art, the Estuarium is dedicated to the unique ecosystem of eastern North Carolina’s estuaries and its effect on local culture.

Little Washington is also home to a thriving arts and entertainment scene. As visitors stroll through downtown, works of art decorated by regional artists, independent art galleries and exhibits line the streets. Little Washington also loves music. Many local restaurants feature live music during the weekends, and The Beaufort County Traditional Music Association shares sounds and entertainment with audiences at The Turnage Theatre.

Let Little Washington’s rich history and natural beauty set the stage for an overnight stay or daytrip. The city offers something for everyone, whether adventure, art, history or dining is the reason for visiting. It is more than just a destination – it is also the perfect starting point for exploring everything eastern North Carolina has to offer.
