Five Weekend Getaways in the UK

April 23rd, 2012

Jumeirah Carlton Tower, London, England, UK

The wonderful modern and beautiful Marriott Hotel London-Heathrow International Airport - Business hotel and vacation dream at this Landmark Airport! 2008! Beauty in hospitality by Bill Marriott!

Sometimes you just need to get away, if only for a weekend. Regardless of the reason, your next UK weekend retreat is waiting for you. In such a rich and varied part of the world, it won’t be hard to find the perfect spot. Here are just a few suggestions.

Victorian Seaside: Broadstairs, East Kent

Visit the historic town of Broadstairs and enjoy the Victorian homes, sample the wares of the ice cream parlors, and be amazed by the cliffs that inspired Charles Dickens as he visited in years past. In Broadstairs you’ll also find traditional tea houses, lovely gardens, and a lighthouse. If you’re looking for a Victorian bed and breakfast to complete your experience, the Burrow House lies right at the seaside; you can stroll along the beach to your heart’s content. Several bays in the area make relaxing swimming spots.

Chocolate Indulgence: Cardiff, Wales

The Vale Resort near Cardiff features just what you might expect at a first-class resort: golf courses, spa treatments and massages, and even family packages that allow parents and children to enjoy activities together. But the Vale Resort also offers special packages, or “breaks,” that you’ll have to see to believe. These packages include a hands-on Welsh cooking workshop and a chocolate-making workshop. These breaks are offered only on certain dates, so book early if you’d like to participate.

Shakespeare’s Home: Stratford-upon-Avon

You’ll find more than a weekend’s worth of adventure in Stratford-upon-Avon. Stroll along the river and enjoy the historical half-timber architecture. Visit the graves of William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway at Holy Trinity Church. Take in a play by Shakespeare himself at the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre. According to the website of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the boards of the original stage have been re-laid in the foyer, so you can walk on them yourself. Stratford-upon-Avon is a must for Shakespeare fans, history buffs, and anyone else seeking a delightful adventure.

Romantic Retreat: Pamos Farm Cottage in Devon

For a romantic weekend getaway for just the two of you, you’ll enjoy visiting the Pamos Farm Cottage, a bed and breakfast near Upottery, Devon. Its thatched roof and Old World appeal will remind you of an English farm cottage, and that’s just what it is. Surrounded by woodlands and fields, you’ll literally be hidden away from the rest of the world. If you want to explore the nearby area, you’ll find the coast less than an hour’s drive away. The city of Exeter is 25 miles away, which is close enough to visit for fun, but far enough away that it won’t be at your doorstep.

Ancient History: Bath and Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of those breathtaking must-see places. If you haven’t already visited it, a weekend getaway would be a perfect opportunity to do so. Next, visit the Roman baths in the city of Bath, originally built by the Romans themselves around a natural hot spring. Both sites offer stunning views of architecture dating back thousands of years. Both are only a short trip from London, and could be visited together over one weekend.

There’s something for everyone in this land of so much culture, history, and varied landscapes. The next time you’re ready to get away, look no further than one of the many attractions the UK has to offer.

Summer Holidays: Does ‘affordable luxury’ still exist?

April 20th, 2012

With the cost of living on the up and consumers being squeezed from every direction, you may be forgiven for thinking that you can only choose your holidays from the bargain bin. But holidays shouldn’t be considered an unnecessary luxury and instead, should be permitted as an important break from the stresses of the daily grind.

When it comes to holidays, affordable luxury does still exist and the Canary Islands are a great place to start. For laid-back calm with great beaches, you’ll find plenty of Fuerteventura hotel breaks that won’t break the bank – while across the water on neighbouring Lanzarote, there are more than enough luxury Lanzarote hotels available at reasonable prices – especially if you book within a few weeks of your departure date.

Elsewhere, Tenerife hotel resorts come in all shapes and sizes to suit everyone from budget-conscious families to large groups or romantic couples. Book late for the best deals or reserve your place well in advance for great early bird offers and the best availability. Families can often find free kids’ places or great deals on hotels with children’s activities and clubs too. With its imposing Mt Teide and spectacular National Park, Tenerife is also a great island for exploring so don’t forget to find car hire Tenerife before you go.

The islands offer something for everyone and a price to suit even the most stringent of budgets, promising a myriad of different holiday experiences and wonderful holiday memories that will stay with you long after you leave.

It is best to avoid run of the mill fast food restaurants as these do not represent American culture. Stopping by a family owned diner or grill will provide the best takeout foods possible.

The Surfers guide to the UK

April 18th, 2012

Surfing has seen its popularity grow significantly in recent times in the UK. The realisation that many of this country’s shores produce waves big enough for surfers of all abilities to hone their skills has resulted in its current status. Because of that, many people are choosing to go on holiday at touring caravan sites within easy reach of surfing spots. Although surfing in the UK can be every bit as fun as in other countries such as Australia and the United States, there are some beaches where catching a wave is easier than others.

Newquay

Perhaps the best place to start for surfing holidays is the South West, particularly in Devon and Cornwall. The Cornish town of Newquay is a popular destination for surfers for a number of reasons. The main one is that the waves which crash against the beach are big enough for most of the year to give experienced surfers a challenge.

Sennen Cove

Further down the northern coast of Cornwall is Sennen Cove, which is ideal for intermediate surfers. If there’s anywhere in the county which has good surfing conditions, it’s here, and there are plenty of shops nearby selling surfing equipment, ideal if you’ve booked a holiday here with a website such as Pitchup.com.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Elsewhere in England, for beginners, Saltburn-by-the-Sea in North Yorkshire is perfect. Just a few miles east of Middlesbrough, it’s a safe place for aspiring young surfers to go, as there’s a lifeguard who’s usually on duty to make sure that no-one gets harmed. This town is friendly, cheap and has plenty of nearby campsites. Surfing lessons with the Saltburn Surf School cost just £20 a head, with all the relevant gear included.

Thurso

For those who really want a challenge, then a trip to Thurso East in the Scottish Highlands is just the place. Its reputation is up there with that of Newquay, but with the water being altogether more choppy and cold, you should only visit if you’re an expert. The waves here are reminiscent of those found near Hawaii, and the best time to visit is around Easter.

Croyde

Back in the West Country, Croyde lies on the North Devon coast, and although the waves here are mainly for intermediate surfers, it’s not without its challenges. There are a number of rocky spots which could be dangerous, so if you want to negotiate them, it’s worth your while being cautious. Croyde itself has plenty to offer visitors when they’re not at the beach. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and shops to visit, while a gentle stroll in and around the area will help you unwind after you’ve caught a few waves.

Paris often springs to mind when considering a weekend away, and with its iconic landmarks, romantic vibe and excellent restaurants, it’s not hard to see why. Film Festival Anyone? 7 Trips for Cinema Buffs to Explore!

April 14th, 2012

Are you stuck for vacation ideas this year? Have you done Disney so many times that you don’t care if you ever go back? If you’re a film buff, why not take a tour of some of the best film festivals in the United States and Canada? Film festivals can immerse you in the culture of movie-making and allow you a glimpse into the world that you love. Here are seven film festivals that any film buff must visit at least once in their lifetime:

1. Sundance Film Festival:

This festival is the most popular, attracting actors, film executives and directors to Utah every year. The festival is the largest in the United States and has been the point of discovery for many of today’s celebrities. Visit Park City in January and soak up the atmosphere provided by this amazing gathering.

2. Tribeca Film Festival:

Founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Craig Hatkoff and Jane Rosenthal, this film festival was Hollywood’s answer to 9/11. With the intention of breathing new life back into the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, these Hollywood heavy-hitters have turned the festival into one of the most respected in the nation. The festival brings more than $10 million into the local economy each year.

3. Chicago International Film Festival:

This festival has been an annual event for the past 45 years, honoring filmmakers from around the world. Head out to Chicago in October to take part in one of the oldest film festivals in the nation. The Chicago International Film Festival takes diversity very seriously, creating a program to educate the citizens of Chicago, and the world, about the importance and impact of film festivals.

4. San Diego Film Festival:

Held every September in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, the film festival is a five-day celebration of film. Documentaries, shorts and feature films are highlighted as well as holding conferences and seminars for attendees. The best thing about this festival is its abundance of chic parties and get-togethers.

5. Vancouver International Film Festival:

This film extravaganza screens films from over 80 countries on ten separate screens every year. Several things make the film festival stand apart from all others: the selection of East Asian films, the screening of Canadian films and an incredibly large nonfiction program. The festival is one of the most diverse, welcoming guests from across the world. Since 1982, the VIFF has made it its mission to encourage compassion and understanding among the world’s varied cultures.

6. L.A. Comedy Shorts Film Festival:

Anyone who loves comedy simply must attend this festival that’s held in March of every year. The festival is new to the scene, having its first appearance in 2009. Don’t let that dissuade you from attending! Not only does the festival celebrate comedy on celluloid but its founders are always looking for new talent among the crowd.

7. San Francisco International Film Festival:

Founded in 1957 by Irvine Levine, this festival features a wide variety of work. Here you’ll find documentaries, action movies, animated films and shorts. If you’re a budding entertainer, you’ll enjoy the seminars and workshops put on by experts in the field. Whether you love movies or want to be in them, this film festival must be attended at least once in a lifetime.

If you’re looking for an interesting way to spend your vacation this year, any one of these film festivals will offer you the excitement that you’re looking for. If you’ve got the time, why not try to attend more than one? You might just find yourself “discovered!”

Plan To Study Abroad? 5 Destinations That Won’t Disappoint!

April 13th, 2012

Oxford University

Australia

The Colliseum, Rome

As a college student, studying abroad can offer you a wealth of opportunity that you won’t find on your college campus. By immersing yourself in a new culture, you will not only gain appreciation for a way of life that differs from yours, but you’ll be expanding your network of professionals that you may be able to utilize once you graduate.

Not all study abroad destinations are created equal! Here are five destinations that won’t disappoint:

1. England

England is a country very similar to the United States and, as such, many students feel comfortable in the country. Because the two countries share so much history, students also find it an interesting country in which to study. There are a range of programs and majors available in the UK for American students. Look for programs in humanities, political science and economics. Great Britain is one of the most affordable options for students on a budget. The public transportation system makes it incredibly easy to tour the country or make your way to Ireland and Scotland when you have a break from your studies!

2. Australia

Second on the list of amazing study abroad destinations is Australia. Another English speaking country, Australia is diverse enough to be interesting but familiar enough to make students feel at ease. Thanks to the continent’s varied range of wildlife, biology, zoology and anthropology majors flock to the country in droves. You can choose to study in the country for a semester, a summer or an entire year! Just remember that the seasons are opposite of those in the United States! You’ll need to pack accordingly.

3. Japan

Japan is a beautiful country and one of America’s top competitors. The mix of history and modern trends makes the country appealing for students from the modern country of America. If you are willing to teach English while you study the language and culture of Japan, you’ll find study abroad programs especially accessible. Temple University is by far the most popular university for American students. Lessons at Temple are taught in English and you’ll study side-by-side with Japanese students.

4. Italy

Italy is one of the best places to receive your education in all of Europe. Whether you want to study art or architecture, Italy is the place to do it. Culinary students study in Italy to learn the intricacy of Italian cuisine and master their skills alongside top chefs. Other popular programs of study for American students include botany, viticulture and agriculture. When you have a break from your studies, tour the fabulous Italian countryside and mingle with the locals.

5. Argentina

If you are looking for a country in Latin America in which to complete your study abroad program, Argentina should top the list. Choose one of the Spanish immersion programs that are abundant among this country’s universities and you will perfect your Spanish speaking skills. If you plan on teaching Spanish to elementary or high school students, studying in Argentina for a year will guarantee that you are more than ready! From beautiful, historic neighborhoods to an exciting nightlife, you’ll be able to complete your studies while maintaining a college student’s lifestyle.

Studying abroad can be one of the best experiences of your college career. You will have a chance to learn about a new culture, learn a new language and bring home lessons that you can carry with you for a lifetime. If you have a chance to study abroad, take it! It could be the best thing that you ever do!

Traveling for Something You Love

April 12th, 2012

If you love to engage in a certain activity, traveling to a destination geared toward your hobby will only turn up the experience. You can travel for nearly any pastime, but here are a few of the most common activities that inspire people to take a trip.

Golfing

Traveling for golf allows you to experience a wide variety of courses with different landscapes, climates and challenges. Each destination is unique and creates a distinct atmosphere. Some of the most popular golfing destinations include Bovey Castle in England, the American Club in the U.S. and Waterville Golf Links in Ireland.
At Bovey Castle, you can enjoy golfing next to an exquisite castle reminiscent of the Edwardian age. At the American Club, you can experience some of the most popular courses in the U.S. When you aren’t on the green, you will also have the opportunity to enjoy some of the exotic spa treatments available at the Kohler Waters Spa. The Waterville Golf Links is one of the most remote courses in all of Ireland. Experience the golf course in an atmosphere of privacy and relaxation, then return to your well-appointed suite to relax.
Whether you are golfing in the states or in another country, you will probably need to take your own equipment. In most cases, it’s easier to ship your golf clubs than to fly with them. To choose the lowest rate, consider looking for shipping quotes online.

Surfing

Even if you live close to the beach, surfing enthusiasts know each shore is different. Traveling to different beaches around the world allows you to experience different waves and landscapes. Some of the most popular surfing destinations include San Onofre State Beach in California; Pavones, Costa Rica; and Surfers’ Point in Margaret River, Australia.
On San Onofre State Beach, you can enjoy easy-breaking waves with tourists and locals alike. In Pavones, Costa Rica, you will find some of the longest break waves anywhere on the planet. In the summer, a ride on one of these waves may be as long as three minutes! Finally, Surfers’ Point in Australia offers consistently strong waves that often approach 18 feet in height.
If you decide to take your own surfboard, you can either check it at the airport or ship it to the destination ahead of you. In some cases, your equipment may be safer with a shipping company than with an airline.

Bird watching

You can watch birds from almost anywhere. However, many of the most intriguing species are concentrated in exotic locations that require travel. Some of the top bird watching destinations include Costa Rica, Zimbabwe, Canada and New Zealand.
Costa Rica boasts almost 1,000 species of birds, including humming birds, parrots, quetzal and pelicans. In Zimbabwe, you will find more than 400 species of birds. You can view these creatures on one of the many available bird safaris or on your own. In Canada, you will find one of the most diverse bird populations in the world. One of the most popular Canadian birds is the snowy owl, which possesses an impressive 5-foot wingspan. New Zealand, which has been one of the most popular bird watching destinations for many years, is home to the flightless Kiwi, along with many other species.
Regardless of your chosen pastime, you can find several unique destinations that will allow you to experience the activity in a whole new way. Each location has its own unique personality, landscape and accompanying amenities. With so many options, you will never get bored!
